We have created a new whole hand input interface called a Squeezable Interface . This interface allows for people to control the computer using pinching, twisting, squeezing and other forms of whole hand
manipulation. We want to use this device to create a new musical instrument.
Description of Project Activities
We would like to connect a robust version of the Squeezable Interface with other augmented input devices to a visual programming environment for audio and video processing called Max/MSP . The first step in the process is to create a Max/MSP object that encapsulates the squeezable interface. Once in the visual programming environment, it will be used to
control a voice synthesizer that has already been implemented in the Max/MSP environment. New algorithms for mapping hand manipulation to
vocal sounds will need to be developed.
In summary, the project requires:
- creating Max/MSP object for the Squeezable interface
- creating gesture mapping algorithms to control a voice synthesizer
- working on developing performance with the new musical interface
If we can do everything before the end of term, we would like to submit the work to the New Interfaces for Musical Expression which will be held in Vancouver. Thus, this is a good opportunity to get a publication for your resume.
